Strengthen and Encourage the Brethren 02/23/14

This week’s scripture is from Mark:

Jesus Washing Disciples Feet -- Albert Gustaf Aristides 1898“… whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”   (Mark 10:43-45)

When James and John asked Jesus for favor to sit at His right hand and left hand in positions of authority and honor when He came into His glory, the Lord quickly set them straight. Whereas the call to Christian life and service is irrevocable, all greatness, honor, and glory belong to the Lord alone. We are called to be servants, to give of ourselves to others for His glory.

John later records that Jesus pressed this lesson home at the Last Supper when Jesus took a basin of water and a towel and washed His disciples’ feet — an act that was reserved for the lowest servant or slave in a household. To serve is to sacrifice ourselves for others, and Jesus’ sacrifice of His life on the cross was the ultimate act of service and sacrifice.

May the Lord bless you to become a servant and true disciple.
