Strengthen and Encourage the Brethren 02/24/13

This week’s scripture is from Hebrews:

“My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline,
Jesus risenand do not lose heart when he rebukes you,
because the Lord disciplines those he loves,
and he chastens everyone he accepts as a son.”
   (Hebrews 12:5-6)

We worship the Lord, and we seek to live good and godly lives, to be kind and loving, yet at times it seems our own unrighteousness and sinfulness is brought right before our face. The Holy Spirit holds it out to us as a rebuke and we shrink back under conviction. We feel chastened and struggle against the sinfulness that plagues us. But take heart and do not turn away for the Lord is for us, not against us, for the Lord trains those He loves. It is assurance that you are a child of God and dearly loved. For the Lord wishes us to submit to Him, to endure discipline and correct our faults, to learn to always in all circumstances, good and bad, to turn to Him, to come as a child to its Father, and embrace Him.

May the Lord’s love for you be evident in every circumstance.

This week’s scripture is from 1 John:

Jesus Christ 4“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”    (1 John 1:9)

It is difficult if not impossible for us to remain in righteousness. Even if we do not act out in unrighteous ways, our thoughts betray us: angry thoughts, careless thoughts, impure thoughts. Our mind can slip wayward in a moment, and yet we draw it back, the thought, the idea, was there. We seek the mind of Christ, but we fall short; our thoughts are not His thoughts, and even to think evil is sin. We have no righteousness of our own, yet He is righteous and in Him our righteousness is found. Thankfully, the Lord loves us and when we confess our sins, He forgives us and His righteousness covers and cleanses us.

May the righteousness of the risen Lord be yours this very day.

This week’s scripture is from Psalms:

Jesus Christ“…the Lord is gracious and compassionate.”   (Psalm 111:4b)

People are not only lost, they are hurting. Our neighbors, our co-workers, our family, all about us people are in need, suffering affliction and pain, oppression and strife, hurt and loss. They moan and weep in their anguish and sorrow, yet who hears them? Darkness tries to engulf them. They need the touch of God in their life; they need the light of Christ, yet so many don’t know Him. They suffer without hope or faith. But we do know Him; we can be the grace of God in their life; we can come alongside them with compassion and mercy; we can bring hope and faith; we can love them; we can represent Christ to them.

May the Lord bless you to minister grace and compassion to those in need.

This week’s scripture is from Mark:

“You shall love your neighbor as yourself.”    (Mark 12:31)Jesus Christ 4

Honestly, it can be difficult at times to love our neighbor, especially if they are not loving or lovely people, especially when their actions are rude, inconsiderate, or hurtful. Our flesh can rise up against them, and our actions betray us. Yet we are commanded by our Lord to love our neighbor. Commanded. Love is the choice we must make. We must not rise up in the flesh, but rise up in Christ. We must respond in His love no matter the circumstances, whether we are hurt or not. As Christ loves us, we must love them; we must act in love; we must speak in love; we must forgive in love. For His children, love is the only choice.

May the Lord bless you to truly love others as He has loved you.
